How to avoid being an “accidental entrepreneur” and make your business more valuable.
I recently heard the term “accidental entrepreneur” applied to recruitment industry founders. Then, within 48 hours, 3 people asked me if I believe that to be true.
Well, it did make me stop and think! Does it mean lack of thought, care and effort? If so, it’s definitely not true!
There are thousands of high performers doing their own thing in their own businesses, working hard to deliver quality services, with genuine passion, energy and care. Of course, all this contributes to success in business. But that only goes so far, as many find out as they try to scale up or even achieve modest growth. And that's where “accidental” can happen – with leaders having to spend precious time in situations that they had never envisaged. Such as managing diminishing quality as team size grows, high staff turnover and learning all manner of “what they don’t know they don’t know” – the hard way.
No-one intentionally signs up for more problems than fun. But it doesn't have to be like that, and it definitely doesn’t need a master’s in business management to fix it! It's about:
a) capturing the brilliance you started with in the first place, and transforming it into an environment for everyone to thrive, along with your business; and
b) rather than leaving it to chance, filling gaps in your current know-how, in a practical and manageable way.
Transform your entire business structure to enhance performance at every level, and make your business more valuable.
